Roger Sabon has previously been described as “one of the more intellectual vignerons in Chateauneuf-du-Pape” by the iconic wine critic Robert Parker. His wines frequently rank amongst the appellation’s finest thanks to the property’s exceptional terroir and old vines which were planted back in the 1900s. As well as 18 prized hectares in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the Sabons also have holdings in the appellation of Lirac which is known for its lighter, more delicate reds. The Sabon version is crafted from 50-year old Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah and Carignan vines planted on red clay and limestone soils. They’re carefully harvested by hand, fermented in tanks and then matured in neutral foudres and demi-muids for 9 months. This minimal oak influence allows the full beauty of the land and the fruit to shine through, with vibrant cherry and berry notes on the nose along with hints of dried herbs and sunbaked earth. On the palate there’s a medium body, firm tannins, and a solid core of fruit which lingers long on the tongue. A great everyday wine to enjoy with friends and family alongside a casual platter of cheeses and charcuterie.
